Our kaupapa

What is Multicultural Collective?

A small group of people that organise projects and events that foster multicultural and intersectional solidarity, increase social cohesion and make a positive impact in the community. We collaborate with multiple groups that align with our values. Our area of focus is Tawa and Porirua.

Why Tawa and Porirua?

Both regions have about 14 different languages other than English and have a high number of people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This presents many opportunities for culture sharing and multicultural solidarity.

  • Tawa: 13% of Māori and 36% of Pacific, Asian, MELA and other ethnicities.
  • Porirua: 23% of Māori and 41% of Pacific, Asian, MELA and other ethnicities.

Types of work we want to do

Culture Share

Events that showcase the multiculturality of Tawa and Porirua, build connection in the community and breaks barriers among different groups in a friendly and relaxed environment.

Our hope is to increase social cohesion and belonging.

Skills Share

Workshops to learn and consider different career paths, types of work, entrepreneurship, tools and ways of organising.

Our hope is to give tools and empower people to improve their lives and careers.

Community building

Discussions on resilience, integration and community participation. Mutual aid initiatives that come from the people in Tawa and Porirua. Te Tiriti and Tikanga learning.

Our hope is to increase resilience, intergroup collaboration and respect for Te Tiriti.

Our values

Curiosity

We are interested in different cultures and ways of doing things, and want to break out of our own cultural and contextual bubbles.

Intersectionality

We acknowledge a person is not unidimensional, but a combination of many contexts like culture, ethnicity, gender identity, neurodiversity, family, personality, etc.

Intersectionality

Integrity: we honour our commitments, follow through with our promises and respect groups rules.

Action-oriented

We give our time and effort to carrying out a successful event or project that makes an impact.

Mana-enhancing

we behave in words and actions in a way that cares for other's entire dimensions.

Community Outreach

We plan to regularly meet with people who live or work in Tawa and Porirua to gather their insights, wants and needs and introduce the collective. These conversations will inform our next projects or events.
